Charles Steinfield is a professor in the Department of Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media at Michigan State University, where he has held a faculty position for more than two decades. He holds a B.A. in Communication from Michigan State University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication Theory and Research from the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California. Professor Charles Steinfield is regarded today as one of the leading researchers in the world in the area of the social and organizational impacts of information and communication technologies. He is an award-winning author of six books and more than one hundred articles published in scholarly venues, and is a sought-after speaker at major international conferences. The National Science Foundation and many recognized technology and research companies around the world, including Northern Telecom, Ameritech, BellCore, EDS, France Telecom Research, and the Telematica Institute in the Netherlands, have funded his research. Charles Steinfield has been a visiting professor and researcher at a number of institutions in the U.S. and in Europe. These include the Institut National des Télécommunications in France, Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, Bellcore, and the Telematics Institute in the Netherlands. He has also taught courses for the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration in their annual summer Interactive Telecommunications Programs and was a summer visiting researcher at the French national telecommunications research laboratory, CNET (now called France Telecom Research). He is a recipient of Michigan State University's Distinguished Faculty and Teacher-Scholar Awards, and was awarded a nine-month Fulbright research grant to study information services usage in France. At Michigan State University, in addition to his research, Steinfield teaches courses related to telecommunications technologies and ecommerce. He has also led a study abroad program for over a decade to Paris examining the telecommunications and media sector in Europe.
