Graduating Seniors - Become the student commencement speaker
By: K. Skorupski
October 19, 2009
Are you graduating December 2009?
Have you thought about representing the Class of 2009 by being the student speaker during the commencement ceremony?
The ceremony will be held Saturday, December 12, 2009. There are two separate ceremonies. One held at 10 am for Arts and Letters, Eli Broad Business, James Madison, Music and Social Science. The second will be held at 2 pm for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Communication Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Lyman Briggs, Natural Science and Nursing. A graduating senior from the 10 am and from the 2 pm ceremony will be selected to address his or her fellow students.
Your speech should be no more than 4-5 minutes in length and attention-grabbing, personally meaningful, thought-provoking, and engaging to your fellow graduating seniors. It should embody the unique spirit and feeling each of us experiences as a graduate of Michigan State University. As commencement is a time to celebrate a pinnacle in your academic career, it is very important to include academic experiences in your speech. Consider including important study abroad lessons, the significant impact of a particular professor or a class, an influential reading, and/or other academic examples.
Please email your application and speech to Senior Class Council at acadevnt@msu.edu no later than 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 23.
In Phase I of the selection process the selection committee will read each speech.
In Phase II a group of candidates will be selected for further consideration, and be notified by telephone or email by Friday, October 30. These candidates must then sign up for an interview. At the interview each candidate will present the speech to the selection committee as if it were commencement day. Interview dates are Wednesday, November 4 and Thursday, November 5. All Phase II candidates will be notified of selection status by Tuesday, November 10.
